Precision Plate Grinding Services
When your project demands exact tolerances, a flawless surface finish, and a partner who understands the unique challenges of titanium and specialty alloys, MSI Corporation delivers. Our precision plate grinding services have set the industry standard since 1972 — serving aerospace, defense, and industrial manufacturers across North America who can't afford to compromise on quality.
Primary and Finish Grinding Capabilities
MSI operates one of the largest and most capable plate grinding fleets in North America. With seven gantry grinders and specialized Midwest grinding equipment, we process plates and slabs that most facilities simply can't accommodate. Whether you need primary stock removal or precision finish grinding, our team delivers consistent results on even the most demanding jobs.
Gantry Grinding
Our fleet of seven gantry grinders handles plates up to 300 inches long by 100 inches wide, achieving thickness tolerances of ±0.050 inches. This capacity gives us the ability to process oversized titanium plates, stainless slabs, and high-nickel alloy materials that exceed the limits of conventional grinding equipment.
Coolant-Assisted Belt Polishing
For applications requiring a superior surface finish, our coolant-assisted belt polishing systems deliver consistent, high-quality results across the full length of your material. Coolant application throughout the grinding process controls heat generation — a critical factor when working with titanium and other thermally sensitive specialty alloys where surface integrity cannot be compromised.
Alpha Case Removal
Titanium develops a brittle oxygen-enriched surface layer — known as alpha case — during hot working and heat treating operations. Left in place, alpha case dramatically reduces fatigue life and can lead to premature failure in critical applications. MSI's precision grinding process reliably eliminates alpha case, restoring the material's mechanical properties and ensuring your titanium meets the strictest aerospace and industrial specifications.
Gauge Reduction
When your material arrives oversize or requires thickness reduction to final specification, our grinding systems deliver tight, repeatable gauge reduction across the full plate surface — maintaining parallelism and flatness throughout.
Materials We Process
MSI's grinding capabilities span a broad range of metals and specialty alloys, including:
- Titanium alloys — all commercially pure grades and Ti-6Al-4V
- Stainless steel — all grades, sheet and heavy plate
- High-nickel alloys — Inconel, Hastelloy, and related superalloys
- Specialty and exotic alloys — processed to your exact specification
Each material presents unique grinding challenges. Our team's decades of hands-on experience with titanium and specialty metals means we understand the specific parameters — feed rates, coolant management, abrasive selection — required to achieve the right result for each alloy and application.
Industries Served
MSI's precision plate grinding services support manufacturers and processors operating in demanding industries where material quality is non-negotiable:
- Aerospace and defense
- Power generation
- Oil and gas
- Medical device manufacturing
- Heavy industrial manufacturing
- Specialty metals distribution
Why Choose MSI for Plate Grinding?
Capacity Competitors Can't Match
With seven gantry grinders and a 80,000 square foot facility equipped with 75-ton overhead hoists, MSI regularly handles jobs that other processors turn away. If your material is oversized, overweight, or over-spec for typical grinding shops, we're built for it.
Over 50 Years of Titanium Expertise
MSI has been processing titanium and specialty alloys since 1972. That depth of experience translates directly into better outcomes for your material — fewer rejects, tighter tolerances, and a team that anticipates the technical challenges before they become production problems.
Complete Traceability and Certification
Every piece we process is supported by full material traceability. Our in-house testing and inspection team — including Level II NDT inspectors — provides the documentation your customers and quality system require. Ultrasonic testing, chemical analysis, and ISO-compliant calibration are all available under one roof.
One-Stop Processing
Grinding is often one step in a larger processing sequence. MSI's full-service facility means your material can move from grinding to saw cutting, heat treating, shot blasting, or inspection without leaving our facility — reducing lead times, handling risk, and supply chain complexity.
