Industrial Heat Treating Services
Precise, controlled heat treatment is often the step that determines whether a material performs as designed or fails in the field. MSI Corporation's heat treating services bring the same precision and process discipline to thermal operations that we apply across every service in our facility — backed by full certification, complete material traceability, and over 50 years of specialty metals experience.
Heat Treating Capabilities
MSI operates car bottom furnaces capable of reaching temperatures up to 2150°F, giving us the thermal range to execute the full spectrum of industrial heat treating processes for steel, titanium, stainless, and specialty alloys. Our furnace design is purpose-built for large, heavy material — the same pieces we grind, mill, and saw cut every day in our facility.
Annealing
Annealing relieves internal stresses, restores ductility, and improves machinability by heating material to a controlled temperature and allowing it to cool in a managed environment. MSI's annealing process is particularly well-suited for titanium and specialty alloys that have undergone significant cold or hot working and require microstructural restoration before further processing or shipment.
Benefits of annealing with MSI:
- Reduced internal stress and distortion risk in subsequent operations
- Restored ductility for materials that will undergo further forming or machining
- Improved machinability, reducing tooling wear and processing costs downstream
- Full certification and furnace records available upon request
Normalizing
Normalizing refines grain structure, improves mechanical uniformity, and enhances the structural integrity of steel and alloy plate after hot working or welding operations. By heating material above its critical temperature and air cooling in a controlled environment, normalizing produces a consistent, predictable microstructure — critical for materials destined for structural or load-bearing applications.
Tempering
Tempering follows hardening or quenching operations to reduce brittleness and achieve the final balance of hardness, toughness, and ductility required by your specification. MSI's tempering capability allows precise soak temperature control throughout the furnace cycle, ensuring uniform properties across the full cross-section of large plates, slabs, and bar stock.
Stress Relieving
Welding, forming, machining, and other manufacturing operations introduce residual stresses into metallic materials. Left unaddressed, these stresses can cause dimensional instability, distortion, or premature fatigue failure in service. MSI's stress relief heat treating cycles reduce these residual stresses to acceptable levels — improving dimensional stability and extending service life without significantly altering the material's mechanical properties.
Car Bottom Furnace Capacity
MSI's car bottom furnace design is specifically suited for large, heavy industrial material. The rail-mounted car system allows oversized plates, slabs, bars, and fabrications to be loaded and unloaded safely and efficiently — without the handling limitations that constrain smaller batch furnaces. This means your material can move directly from our grinding, milling, or saw cutting operations into heat treatment without leaving the facility, with no re-handling risk and no break in traceability.
- Maximum temperature: 2150°F
- Processes available: Annealing, normalizing, tempering, stress relieving
- Certification: Full furnace records and heat treating certification available
- Materials processed: Titanium, stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, high-nickel alloys, specialty metals
Materials We Heat Treat
MSI's heat treating services cover a broad range of metals and specialty alloys, including:
- Titanium alloys — commercially pure grades, Ti-6Al-4V, and other aerospace-grade alloys
- Stainless steel — all grades, sheet and heavy plate
- Carbon and alloy steels — structural and high-strength grades
- High-nickel superalloys — Inconel, Hastelloy, and related materials
- Specialty and exotic alloys — processed to your exact specification
Certification and Traceability
For aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and other regulated industries, heat treating certification is as important as the process itself. MSI provides complete furnace records, cycle documentation, and heat treating certifications for every job — giving your quality team the traceability data your customers and quality system require.
Our heat treating operations are supported by MSI's broader in-house testing and inspection capabilities, including Level II NDT inspectors, ultrasonic testing, and chemical analysis — all available under one roof for complete quality assurance from processing through final certification.
Industries Served
MSI's heat treating services support manufacturers, processors, and distributors operating across demanding industries:
- Aerospace and defense
- Power generation
- Oil and gas
- Heavy industrial manufacturing
- Medical device manufacturing
- Specialty metals distribution and processing
Why Choose MSI for Heat Treating?
Integrated Processing Under One Roof
Heat treating is rarely a standalone operation. At MSI, your material can move seamlessly from precision grinding or planer milling directly into heat treatment — and then on to NDT inspection or saw cutting — all in one facility, with one point of contact and unbroken material traceability throughout. That integration reduces lead times, eliminates inter-facility handling risk, and simplifies your supply chain.
Built for Heavy, Oversized Material
Our car bottom furnace design handles the large-format, high-weight material that defines MSI's processing work. If your plates, slabs, or bars are too large or too heavy for a conventional batch furnace, MSI has the capacity and the handling infrastructure to process them safely and precisely.
Over 50 Years of Specialty Metals Experience
Titanium and specialty alloys respond to heat differently than conventional steels. Getting the cycle right — temperatures, soak times, cooling rates — requires material knowledge that only comes from decades of hands-on experience. MSI's team brings that knowledge to every heat treating job, ensuring your material comes out of the furnace with the properties your specification demands.
Full Certification Available
Every heat treating job at MSI can be accompanied by complete certification documentation — furnace records, cycle data, and heat treat certifications that satisfy the requirements of aerospace quality systems, customer purchase orders, and regulatory compliance programs.
